Thursday, 02 February 2012 17:50

Had an HP Pavilion Slimline s7520n running Windows XP MCE 2005 with ACPI\AWY0001\2&DABA3FF&0 listed as an unknown device. I knew it was the AMD AwayMode device but I had a difficult time locating the driver so I thought I would post here in case anyone else had the same problem.

Windows 7 Bug – Could not reconnect all network drives Print
Friday, 09 September 2011 11:06

Since I upgraded to Windows 7 I noticed that after boot I received a popup dialog from the task tray stating that Windows could not reconnect all network drives. A red "X" is visible over them in when viewed from Windows Explorer. Simply clicking the drive will connect them, but some applications will fail if they depend on information residing on the network resource.

The only fix I have found is hard coding the computers IP. I have tried different DHCP servers, different switches, and exhaust all related network settings in Windows to correct the problem.

Fix for VMware Pause When Open Print
Friday, 29 April 2011 23:57

Problem: VMware Workstation on Windows starts slowly with a delay or pause after launching. I’m not saying the virtual machine starts slowing but the actual application. The first fix for this to me was to uncheck Automatically detect settings in at Control Panel / Internet Options / Connections / Lan settings.

Internet Options LAN Settings

That worked for several versions of VMware. The pause come back recently and after digging some more I found I needed to disable software updates inside Edit / Preferences / Updates.

Craigslist Email Alerts Print
Monday, 14 March 2011 22:51

I don't use Craiglist often but when I do I find myself repeatedly visiting them to repeat the same search over and over. This is especially true for items in high demand or items that are rarely available. So I decided to see if there was any way to automate this.

I wanted to be emailed if the results of my searched changed. Turned out this was pretty simple. The first thing I tried was Yahoo Alerts in combination with Craiglist's RSS feed. The RSS feed is available at the bottom of any page after you complete a search. Just copy the link by right-clicking the RSS emblem and select copy link, then paste that link into your Yahoo Alerts. That worked but I didn't really like it. Yahoo has a way of making things not so simple at times. The next one I tried was Their interface is cleaner and way more intuitive. If RSS feeds don't make a lot of sense to you here is a more detail explanation on how to setup an alert with the service.

Copy Craigslist URL

Go to and register for an free account. Once you have that setup go to your local area Craiglist and conduct your search. After your search, copy the URL from your browser's address bar. Now go back to and paste that URL you just copied into the URL box and click add. From there, you can choose to be notified by instant message, text message to your cellular phone, email, or their application on your smart phone.

If anyone has a better solution leave me a commment!

WinRAR Redundant Folders Print

WinRAR Screenshot

WinRAR the long time king of Windows archiving added a cool new feature a while back that slipped by me. It is tucked away under Options / Settings / Compression tab. The option is called “Remove redundant folders from extraction path”, which basically prevents the old Archive-Name\Archive-Name\Stuff-Inside-Archive from happening.

Navigation to The Webpage Was Canceled Print
Wednesday, 27 January 2010 15:38

I was receiving the message "Navigation to the webpage was canceled - What you can try: Retype the address" the other day on a customers machine when trying to view the help file. I was using F1 to display the CHM help file from within the application. Launching the help file from Windows Explorer exhibited the same results. It was an older system running Windows XP with Service Pack 3. It appears the issues is related to Microsoft KB 892675. The fix for me was the following registry entry:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

Windows 7 Hidden All Tasks Folder Print
Friday, 08 January 2010 06:40

If you create a folder with the special GUID string extention you can enable the "All Tasks" folder in Windows 7.  Make a new folder named:

All Tasks.{ED7BA470-8E54-465E-825C-99712043E01C}

You can rename "All Tasks" to anything you want. This gives you access to many Windows 7 settings from one place. In addition, since all the settings are in one folder, you can use the search box (top right) to search for keywords. Below is the screen shot of every setting available. I also included a batch file to create the folder quickly on your desktop.

Remove Uninstalled Applications from My World Print
Monday, 04 January 2010 05:51

BlackBerry App World keeps a list of the applications you have installed in its My World section.  Removing a previously installed app from your BlackBerry will not remove it from this list.  They show up as 'uninstalled' in the list but they still show up.  I'm using a Bold 9700 (5.0 OS) and what worked for me was to press alt r s t on the My World screen.
