Problem: VMware Workstation on Windows starts slowly with a delay or pause after launching. I’m not saying the virtual machine starts slowing but the actual application. The first fix for this to me was to uncheck Automatically detect settings in at Control Panel / Internet Options / Connections / Lan settings.

That worked for several versions of VMware. The pause come back recently and after digging some more I found I needed to disable software updates inside Edit / Preferences / Updates.
