Firefox extensions are small add-ons that add new functionality to Firefox. They can add anything from a toolbar button to a completely new feature. They allow the application to be customized to fit the personal needs of each user if they need additional features, while keeping Firefox small to download.
There are an enormous amount Firefox extensions available and tutorials available to learn to make your own. I create a short 'A' list broken into developer tools for web developers and web enchancements for gerneral web browsing.

ColorZilla: Advanced Eyedropper, ColorPicker, Page Zoomer and other colorful goodies.
CSS Viewer: A simple CSS property viewer.
MeasureIt: Draw out a ruler to get the pixel width and height.
SearchStatus: Display the Google PageRank and Alexa ranking with search-related tools.
ShowIP: Show the IP address of the current page in the status bar.

Googlebar Lite: A light-weight Google search toolbar for Firefox.
IE View: Open pages in IE via Firefox menu.
Mouse Gestures: Allows you to execute common commands using mouse gestures.
NextPlease: Navigate next/prev search results with the press of a key.
