The "Software A-List" is a short list of essential applications. Some software categories have both free and commercial alternatives. Commercial alternatives aren't listed if the free stuff is better.
Freeware
7-Zip  File archiver with high compression ratio. Only WinRAR beats it.
FastStone Image Viewer Powerful and intuitive photo viewer, editor, and batch converter.
FileZilla Fast and reliable FTP client and server with lots of useful features and an intuitive interface.
Free Download Manger A full-featured download accelerator and manager.
Miranda  Multi protocol instant messenger client. Sort of plain out of the box but offers infinite customizability.
Mozilla Firefox A great alternative to IE with a vast amount of plug-ins.
OpenOffice A monumental achievement, a free cross platform alternative to Microsoft Office.
Opera  Although often disputed, this is the fastest browser on the planet. It's lack of plug-ins support keep me from using it.
PSPad One of the best text editors I have used.
PuTTY A free fully-featured SSH client.
UltraVNC  Display the screen of another computer (via internet or network) on your own screen.
uTorrent Lightweight and efficient BitTorrent client.
Commercial / Shareware
ACDSee The fastest photo viewer on the market. If you work with picture much, it is worth the money.
NOD32 The best virus scanner on the market. All others suck especially Norton and McAfee.
Object Dock Lets you organize your short-cuts and running tasks onto an extremely customizable dock that sits on your desktop.
ReGet Deluxe A powerful download manager aimed at advanced and professional users.

SecureCRT The best SSH client I have found. Fast, flexible, and feature packed. PuTTY is free alternative.
UltraEdit A fantasic text editor. Combine it with UltraCompare and you have the best.
WinRAR Still the king, and it's faster, better interface, and offer more features than the free Z-Zip.
XChat IRC program for Windows and UNIX (Linux/BSD) operating systems. If you not sure what IRC is, then you probably don't want this.
